My Thoughts on MooGoo Skincare

With social media, word of mouth has become a great way to get info on products. In a curly hair group I'm in, I found someone rave about the protein shot from MooGoo. I've seen lots of people rave about products but their ingredient list makes me cringe. MooGoo is a nice, healthy option. Plus, it's  started as a small, family business. Even better, I love supporting the little guys rather than huge conglomerates.

Started in Perth in 2005, the founder Craig Jones noticed that his mom was using udder cream to deal with a skin problem she had. He reformulated it to make it lighter and not greasy. Since then they've grown to have over 40 products and are even being used in hospitals.

Customer Service
I have had a little interaction with their customer service on Facebook. I asked about the preservatives they use, such as hops and the responded quickly and let me know that their products are safe and had passed challenge testing. They also are prompt to respond to most commons on their Facebook page.

However, I've noticed that under their community section on their Facebook page, they have a number of unanswered posts.

Slightly Expensive Prices
I will admit that some of their products are slightly expensive, such as their facial serums and oils. First off, they use quality ingredients that they break down on each product page. They explain what each ingredient is for. Another reason for the prices is due to the packaging they use. Many places use cheap dropper bottles but they use airless pumps. Shipping also comes into play.

Before buying, I compare prices with other companies that I'd recommend such as Garden of Wisdom, From Nature with Love, or Mountain Rose Herbs to see what sales they have and what shipping would be. MooGoo's shipping is a flat-rate $6.50 if you're in the US and I feel like one reason they do that is because they've added some of the shipping cost into the product. This can either work for you or against you depending on how much you order. The other three companies I mentioned are notorious for having rather expensive shipping, so while their products might be cheaper, in the end, costs are really similar. Bottom line: compare product prices with shipping.

According to their website, they have the products independently tested (a British Pharmacopeia Preservative Efficacy Test) to make sure they are sterile. Their products are often used on children or people with broken skin and contaminated products can be dangerous. They also say they use an organic preservative system in all of their creams except for their Eczema Balm which has different requirements as it is a therapeutic product. I think they've discontinued that balm since all I can find are two eczema creams, not balm. I know I have an eczema cream with colloidal oatmeal in an airless container and they don't make that anymore, so they could be referring to that.

Ethics
MooGoo really is fantastic. They choose natural, non-irritating ingredients that are as edible as possible (please don't eat them though) and safe for people of all ages (always do a patch test just in case). They aim for quality and put their family first. They use effect concentrations of ingredients. Made in Australia, they test their products on themselves, not on animals.

Speaking of ethics, MooGood is a very green company. Rather than just throw away old cardboard boxes, they bought a machine that will convert boxes to packing materials. Other things that they do>
  • Use a carbon neutral facility that uses solar power and recycles its own water.
  • Use recyclable packaging.
  • Don't offer refill packages since they're not easily recyclable.
  • Use old cardboard boxes as packing material.
  • Use ingredients that break down easily.
  • Use 100% solar power in their warehouse and head office.
  • Use oils from sustainable farms.

I have not found any info about donating to NGOs or giving back to the community, but I've asked and will update this if they reply.
