MooGoo Natural Sunscreen SPF 30 Review

You know when your parents come to you and go, "when I was young. . . " and you realise just how much things can change. My mom said that when she was young, they didn't have sunscreen so they just slathered themselves with baby oil to get tan. Shocking, isn't it? They didn't have seat belts in the backseat of cars either. Makes you wonder what our kids will think of our lifestyle, doesn't it?

Skin cancer is obviously something you want to avoid and if you're going to go outside, even if it's not sunny, you should use sunscreen. The problem is that there's a lot of products out there that don't have the best ingredients. Many of my friend rave about Badger Balm. They kinda get all starry eyed as they say it. I'd never heard of it before. It looks pretty darn good though. But, I'm trying to be more environmentally conscious, which is hard when you order online since there's packaging and fuel emissions and the like. What I try to do is limit the amount of orders I place in an effort to cut down on my carbon foot print. I usually place a few large orders with a handful of different companies and at that time Badger Balm wasn't on my list. MooGoo was front and center and this sunscreen was one of the items I bought from them.

About MooGoo: On my page about MooGoo, you can read more about their company and read my product reviews. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

A Bit About Badger Balm First
They both have fantastic names though, don't they? Badger Balm has a number of different sunscreens. I did a quick search and the Broad Spectrum SPF 30 came up as Amazon's Choice, however, you needed to re-apply it every 40 minutes or so. I checked the ingredients and it had 18.75% of zinc oxide, which is good, but I wanted to see if I could find something higher. I realised that while their company is fantastic and the product are great, I didn't really see stuff that stood out to me then. To be honest, one of their products does not seem safe to me. The aromatic chest rub has eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint, all three of these essential oils should not be used on children under the age of 3, some say 6. Rosemary should be avoided until age 10. Tisserand and Aromatic Studies have more info.

There are other people who say it doesn't matter and that all essential oils are safe for everyone, but I don't agree with that. What you do with yourself and your kids is up to you, but please do your research and get it from good sources. Mommy bloggers and MLM advocates are not good sources. Certified clinical aromatherapists are. Tisserand has been working in this field longer than I've even been alive. He's one of the world experts on essential oils.

I really find it scary that companies use essential oils across the board for all ages. My daughter had a bad reaction to a not safe for kids Thieves blend when she was a baby. She broke out in hives / a full-body rash, spiked 102 fever, had a swollen face and neck and a splotchy face. Luckily, she didn't have any breathing issues, but they did do a steroid nebulizing treatment on her.

While I totally disagree with their use of essential oils in that chest rub, there are a few things that I would probably buy from them like the aloe vera gel, lip balms, lip tints, cuticle care, night-night balm, sore muscle balm, and sore muscle rub, that latter two being for my husband and the other ones would be for myself and the kids.

I do think that they really should hire an aromatherapist and put safety information on their products. They do use essential oils, such as eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint, that are not safe for kids in a number of their products and that's fine. But they need to clearly state that these products should not be used on kids under X age.

Ingredients
When I bought this sunscreen it came in an airless container and it was hard to get out because the product was so thick. Made of 24.9% zinc oxide, it would still need to be re-applied every 2 hours or so.

Smell and Texture
It smells a bit like sunscreen. I'm guess that's the zinc oxide, I really don't know. It reminds me of summer and the pool. The texture is really kind of horrible. It's so thick. I put it on and it rubs against my skin and pulls my hairs. It's pain and leaves your skin white. I used it a few times and gave up and went back to my regular sunscreen.

A few weeks later, I was checking out the MooGoo Facebook page and saw a tip that would help. They also put the info on their website and the tube. Guess I should pay a bit more attention to instructions.

It's still a bit thick even if you wait, but it's not so bad that it pulls out my hairs. I might try Badger Balm, but the lower zinc oxide plus needing to re-apply it much more often makes me think I'd probably forget and burn or the kids would burn.

Size, Price, and Packaging
When I got this, it came in an airless container. They have since switched to a 120 gr tube. Airless is usually better, but to me, a tube is very similar since it's also hard for light and air to get in. I would argue that a tube is probably better for this since it's so thick. With an airless container, it's hard plastic and difficult to squeeze. But you can squeeze the tube. You would also probably warm it up a bit in your hands to make the sunscreen easier to get out.
