MooGoo Irritable Skin Balm (Eczema & Psorias Cream with Marshmalllow, Elderberry & More) Review

Eczema is just horrible, isn't it? I've been told it's due to a gut imbalance. My mom struggled with it for nearly 30 years before going on an elimination diet. It took two years, but she figured out what foods can set it off and it can be really specific foods. For example, if she eats one type of tomatoes, she's fine. But if she eats another, then she gets a flare-up.

My daughter has had a few eczema flare-ups in her life and now the baby is getting them too. I have tried a number of different eczema treatments. I was told that I should do elimination diets for them as well. However, when your kids spend about 10 hours a day in someone else's care because you work full-time, it's a little difficult to do. So for now, I'm simply putting a bandage on the situation and using lotions, potions, creams, salves, and balms when they get flare-ups. Luckily, they really aren't too bad. The baby might get a few spots and my daughter might get something the size of her fist.

It really isn't that bad, but when it happens to a child, you're desperate to stop it. I recently went through my medicine cabinet and found about a dozen products I had tried and that's everything from specific eczema creams to blends of butters and oils and even squalane. One thing works and then the next time you try it, it won't work. I have no idea why. Maybe your body gets used to it so it doesn't work the next time. I had one product that worked really well, but I hated the ingredients and wanted to throw it out since it had mineral oil and other things in it. My mom told me to just use it. Who cares, if it works, just use it. I draw the line at steroids. I had a doctor prescribe them for the baby for cradle cap. I'm pretty sure my eyes popped out of my head and I told him that I was not using steroids on a baby's face for a mild case of cradle cap.

Ingredients
I love MooGoo, I think they're an amazing company and really have the customer's best interest at heart. But, there's a but. I'm a bit iffy about one of their ingredients (Polysorbate 60) and have a question about another (squalene).

They say that polysorbate 60 is a food grade thickener and logic would tell you that if it's safe to put in your mouth, it's safe to put on your skin. There is fallacy in that thought process. There are plenty of ingredients that we eat, but they can negatively impact our health. Polysorbate 60 is on this list of ingredients to avoid in food.

I do understand there's a difference between topical application and internal application. (Cue MLM essential oil users who have been told that essential oils are safe for internal use while not under a physician or certified clinical aromatherapist's care). Let's look at an example. If I drank a fifth of vodka, I would suffer some pretty bad consequences. If I poured that over my arm, it might just get red and irritated. Totally different reactions to the same ingredient, the difference lies in the use.

So since we're looking at using polysorbate 60 internally vs. externally, I really don't know what the impact would be. Most people know that your skin is your largest organ and what you put on your skin also gets absorbed into your body. Whether or not using polysorbate 60 on your skin will have a negative effect or not is something that I do not know.

The second issue I have is squalene. You might have heard of it. It's controversial because it comes from shark livers. Luckily, people have figured out a way to get it from olives so sharks aren't harmed. There is squalEne with an "e" and squalAne with an "a".

With an E
  • Squalene is shark-derived and is not a stable ingredient.
With an A
  • When squalene undergoes hydrogenation and is turned into a more stable form, then it is spelled squalane.
  • I have also heard that if it is olive-derived, then it is also spelled with an a.
My question is: are they really using an unstable, shark-derived ingredient or is this a simple spelling mistake?

Smell and Texture
Honestly, this doesn't really smell like much of anything, though I did get a small sample so maybe a larger container would smell differently. My balm was a bit of a beige color. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be that color or if I kept it too long and it went bad. I know that when using natural ingredients, the color and texture can change batch to batch. It's not the texture I would consider a balm to bee. To me a balm is really thick and a lotion is thin. A cream is somewhat in the middle. This is the thickness I would expect from a cream.
