Better Shea Butter Mango Butter Review

When I decided to branch out from shea butter and cocoa butter, I knew I wanted to try an affordable exotic butter. I had tried Better Shea Butter's shea butter before and you can read my review here. Since I knew they were an ethical company with quality products, I decided to try their mango butter. They are a small company with only a few products and only offer three butters: shea, cocoa, and mango. My decision was made for me: mango it would be!

About Better Shea Butter: On my page about Better Shea Butter, you can read more about their company and see all my product reviews. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

100% Pure Mango Butter
I knew that Better Shea Butter had a good reputation and I had tried their shea butter previously, so I decided to see what else they had to offer. Unlike their shea butter and cocoa butter which state that they are unrefined, their mango butter just says it's 100% pure. You can buy it here.

I've seen some people say that it's hard to find unrefined mango butter from a reputable source. I know that Vitae Organics has been recommended for unrefined mango butter but their prices are higher than what I want to pay. They source their mango butter from Brazil. I found two other companies, Raw Apothecary and Sky Organics, and they source theirs from India, which could explain why they're more affordable. I decided to ask Better Shea Butter about their mango butter and why it was unrefined. Here's what they said.

I found another website which stated the same: unrefined mango butter is not for cosmetic use.  However, they state that their butter is slightly brown, not orange.

I'm slightly confused as to why unrefined mango butter is not sold for cosmetic use, but it seems that people are still using it for cosmetic use. Maybe it's due to possible skin reactions. I'm not exactly sure. Below you can find the fatty acid profile of mango butter.

Ingredients
Pure and simple: there's one ingredient and that's 100% pure mango butter. It's a handmade bar. The packaging states that it's cosmetic grade and that it's an off-white, unscented, vegetable fat extracted from the fruit kernels of the mango tree.

Stats about Mango Butter
It's got a 2 out of 5 comedogenic rating, which means some people might break out when they use it. Some people believe that comedogenic ratings don't mean much at all: Colin's Beauty Pages and Babe + Beauty. The shelf life is 1 year when stored properly in a cool, dark place away from moisture. I keep all my oils and butters in the fridge.
Uses
It's good as a body butter and can also be used on the scalp, hair, in lip balms, and as an anti-inflammatory product, so if you have eczema psoriasis, or dermatitis, you might want to try it. Even if you don't have a chronic condition, it can help with insect bites, rashes, and even calm sunburn. It can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well. Some people use it as an alternative to cocoa butter.

Smell and Texture
Since it is lightly refined, it doesn't have that strong of a scent. I can still smell it a bit. It smells a bit light and tropical, like what you would expect if you smelled a mango seed. It's not as strong as a fresh mango seed though. It's said to be lighter than unrefined shea butter and I agree, but it is harder than shea butter. Their photo makes the mango butter look like it has a gray tinge to it. Mine doesn't, but I know that every batch can be different. It's a hard butter. It's hard at room temperature, but it is softer than cocoa butter.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I bought the 8oz mini bar because I had never used mango butter before and that was the smallest size available. Next time I will buy the bigger size. It should last up to 2 years if stored properly, but I'll definitely use it up before then.

I make my own body body with various butters and oils that I happen to have around. You could use this on its own if you wanted to. It would be like a solid lotion bar. I prefer to mix it because my goal for 2018 is to use up what I have. I won't be using body butter in the hotter months this year though and that's because I have some cover-up buttercup moisturiser from Moogoo that I plan on using.

The packaging is ok. I think it could be improved. It's super simple and I like that. It's a plastic-like foil lined brown bag. You can reseal the bag and the label is just stuck on. The complaint that I have is inside the package. The mango bar / block /  brick, whatever you want to call it, it then wrapped in a thin plastic bag. This is probably to further ensure freshness, but I don't like it. I think it's extra packaging and the mango butter sticks to it and is wasted.

I wish they wouldn't use that extra plastic. I feel like just putting the mango butter into the bag would be good. You could easily squish out all the air and then it would be easier to scrape the mango butter out. The plastic-like foil lining probably helps keep out light and moisture and I feel like the plastic is extra packaging. Other than that one thing, I love this product.

Would I Get This Again?
I would definitely get this again. Next time I will buy the 1 pound bar. I wish they sold this in bulk like they do with their unrefined shea butter and unrefined cocoa butter. You can buy it here.
