Better Shea Butter Unrefined Ivory Shea Butter Review

I had used shea butter before and had heard of Better Shea Butter. I wanted an ethical company. I had never considered buying from them because I thought they'd be too expensive for me. Their butters turned out to be very affordable.

Unrefined Ivory Shea Butter
Shea butter is a very popular ingredient in cosmetics and body products nowadays. I have decided to try to make body body instead of buying it. By doing this, I'll save money and know exactly what's going into it. I'll also be able to reuse packaging that I already have. I had heard of Better Shea Butter before, but for some reason I thought it was going to be out of my price range. It turns out that it's not expensive. There are a lot of things that I like about the company and you can read them on my page about Better Shea Butter. You can buy it here. Below you can find the fatty acid composition for shea butter.

Ingredients
Pure and simple: there's one ingredient and that's 100% pure shea butter. It's a handmade bar. The packaging states that it's an off-white or ivory-colored vegetable fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree.

Stats about Shea Butter
Shea butter has a varying comedogenic rating which ranges from 0-2 out of 5. Some people believe that comedogenic ratings don't mean much at all: Colin's Beauty Pages and Babe + Beauty. The shelf life is 1-2 years when stored properly in a cool, dark place away from moisture. I keep all my oils and butters in the fridge.

Uses
I use shea butter like many people use coconut oil. I find it to be less greasy. It helps with dry skin and inflammation. It's good for thicker part of your body, such as your heels. I like using it and cocoa butter in the winter.

Smell and Texture
Since it is unrefined, it smells like shea butter. I think that shea butter has a very distinct smell. It's a mild smell to me, not overpowering. It smells a bit earthy, kind of like wet soil and a bit nutty. It is hard and has a smooth texture. It's not as hard as cocoa butter and you can squish it with your hands. It doesn't melt as easily as solid coconut oil would. I prefer unrefined because it's complete with all the nutrients. Refined shea butter has been stripped of those along with the smell.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I bought the one pound block and that was less expensive than buying the half pound block. I had bought unrefined shea butter before and I knew that I would have no problem using it. I'm not sure how long this would last me. I'm hoping at least a few months. It should last up to 2 years if stored properly, but I'll definitely use it up before then.

I make my own body body with various butters and oils that I happen to have around. You could use this on its own if you wanted to. It would be like a solid lotion bar. I prefer to mix it because my goal for 2018 is to use up what I have.

I won't be using body butter in the hotter months this year though and that's because I have some cover-up buttercup moisturiser from Moogoo that I plan on using. Since it has built in SPF15, I figured that would be good to use in the hotter months when I'm not all bundled up. Shea butter does have a natural 6-10 SPF, but I'd prefer something higher in the hotter months.

The packaging is ok. I think it could be improved. It's super simple and I like that. It's a plastic-like foil lined brown bag. You can reseal the bag and the label is just stuck on. The complaint that I have is inside the package. The shea bar / block /  brick, whatever you want to call it, it then wrapped in a thin plastic bag. This is probably to further ensure freshness, but I don't like it. I think it's extra packaging and the shea butter sticks to it and is wasted.

I wish they wouldn't use that extra plastic. I feel like just putting the shea butter into the bag would be good. You could easily squish out all the air and then it would be easier to scrape the shea butter out. The plastic-like foil lining probably helps keep out light and moisture and I feel like the plastic bag is extra packaging. But other than that one thing, I love this product.

Would I Get This Again?
I would definitely get this again. Maybe if I could get some friends together to split the 10 pound bulk unrefined shea butter they offer, I would buy that since I think that's a better deal. You can buy it here.
