I was looking for a serum to help fade sun spots. After checking out ingredients and comparing Amazon reviews at FakeSpot, I thought I found an amazing product. I had heard a little about Avalon Organics and all the ingredients looked to be pretty good. The reviews were reliable as well. It was slightly more than what I would usually spend, but that's because I'm cheap. I bought it anyways, since it's a serum and I was hoping it would last a while.
I put off using this because I tend to save my "good" stuff. Finally I figured that I decided to use it since there was no point in saving good stuff. If you're not going to use it, why buy it? I started using it on cheeks right below the eye socket bones and then along my jaw line where I had acne scars. I was using it every night and sometimes in the mornings if I remembered.

A few weeks later I started breaking out on my jawline. Not just little zits, but large cystic acne. I'd had acne as a teen but never cystic acne. I chalked it up to stress since I was going through an extremely stressful period financially, personally, and professionally. People kept telling me that it could be my diet or my sleep schedule, but they hadn't changed at all. Some other people said maybe it was hormones, but I don't think they changed either. Or laundry detergent or my pillow. But everything was the same.
The more I broke out, the more serum I used. After all, I was trying to reduce dark spots. Every now and again I would turn the bottle over and wonder, what's in this stuff? Unfortunately, the bottle doesn't have the ingredients listed on them.
Fast forward a few weeks later and I was in a Facebook group asking for help and someone finally said that maybe it was the serum. I couldn't understand why as it looked to have pretty good ingredients. So I went online and looked up the ingredients for the Intense Defense Facial Serum. Someone said that glycerin and cocoa butter often cause people to break out. The 3rd ingredient is glycerin and the 8th ingredient is cocoa butter, which ranks 4 out of 5 on the comedogenic scale. Some people believe that comedogenic ratings don't mean much at all: Colin's Beauty Pages and Babe + Beauty.
I went through the Amazon reviews and saw that many other people had the same issue. They started using it and they broke out. They stopped using it and their breakouts stopped. It took me a couple months for me to figure out it was the serum. I'm sure it works well for some people, since it has good reviews. It did not, however, work well for me at all.

Ingredients
The ingredients are pretty good, however, as I mentioned, it does have glycerin and cocoa butter. Many of the ingredients are also certified organic.image source |
Smell and Texture
This has a pleasant smell but it's hard to describe. It's very light and citrusy. I could not smell the cocoa butter at all. It's pretty thin. It's got the consistency of a lotion.
Size, Price, and Packaging
It comes in a 1oz airless orange pump. I wish the packaging had the ingredients on it. Had it had the ingredients, I probably would have stopped using it sooner since I know that cocoa butter ranks high on the comedogenic list.
Would I Get This Again?
No. It caused me to break out pretty badly. I know that some people love this serum, it did not work for me. If you're interested, you can buy it here.
