Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque Review

My hair is about to the middle of my back. I have 2B, low-porosity, protein-sensitive hair. My hair is medium thickness and low density. I'm of European descent and I have dark virgin hair.

About Shea Moisture: On my page about Shea Moisture, you can read more about their company and read my product reviews. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

Winter where I am is really dry and it's a time when my hair can stand on end. I was looking for a masque that would help my hair become normal again. I'd seen this masque being recommended over and over again, so I decided to try it.

Ingredients
This has more coconut oil and I really don't think my hair likes it. I feel like it makes my hair stiff when I use it in conditioners. Masques seem to work ok, but they're not spectacular. It has a mandful of other oils like mafura and avocado and butters such as shea butter and mango butter. The last ingredient is butylene glycol butter. It's a humectant but it might not be that healthy for you as Ann Marie Ginanni explains on her blog.

This does have glycerin and honey (both which are humectants), which can cause frizz during high and low dews, however, since I rinse it out, it's not as bad as humectants that I leave in my hair. It does not have aloe in it, which is a film forming humectant.

It also has a protein in the form of hydrolyzed rice protein.

There are a couple issues that I have with the label. First, I really wish companies would get in the habit of listing exactly which essential oils, absolutes, oleoresins, or extracts they used. People have allergies or don't like certain scents. I know that scent is proprietary, however, they really need to think of people's needs. Second, they should use the common name for everything as well. Sometimes they have it in parenthesis and other times they don't, like with Tocopherol, which is Vitamin E.

Smell and Texture
This doesn't have a strong scent at all. It smells a bit fruity and tropical, which is perfect for long winter days.

It is thick like a masque normally is. However, it's not as thick as the JBCO treatment masque and you could definitely put it in a tube instead of the tub/jar it comes in.

Size, Price, and Packaging
Mine is 12 oz and was priced pretty fairly. I use it during the colder months.

It's not that thick so I wish they had stuck it in a different packaging and not the tub it comes in. I hate tubs and jars because they are open to light, air, and contamination. I think that more companies should think about different packaging for masques and deep conditioners.

Would I Get This Again?
Maybe. I don't like that there's not enough info about what exactly is in the essential oil blend. I'd also like to be able to find this packaging again, however, all I can find now is a tub. I'm on the fence about how Shea Moisture claims that no ingredients have changed. Perhaps the ingredients are the same but the sources are different. I'm not sure. If you're interested, you can buy it here or from Naturally Curly.
