Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Treatment Masque Review

My hair is protein-sensitive, but I still need to use protein sometimes otherwise it will end up too moisturized. You need to balance the amount of protein and moisture that your hair requires.  My hair is about to the middle of my back. I have 2B, low-porosity, protein-sensitive hair. My hair is medium thickness and low density. I'm of European descent and I have dark virgin hair.

I had been avoiding protein for a long time since I thought I was protein sensitive. I did the strand test, which involves trying to snap a strand of hair. If it breaks quickly, supposedly you're protein sensitive and should avoid protein. However, I'm starting to think that I don't have enough protein and that's why my hair snaps instantly. Since I had a bunch of Shea Moisture products, I decided to look and see what protein treatments they had.

Ingredients
This has a number of butters and oils in it like coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil, mango butter, olive oil, buriti fruit (maurtia flexuosa), and castor oil, which would make me think it's more of a moisturizing deep conditioner. However, coconut oil and aloe can act like a protein for some people. This product also has hydrolyzed vegetable protein added to it. I think that it's got a balanced mix of both moisture and protein for my hair.

This does have glycerin, which can cause frizz during high and low dews, however, since I rinse it out, it's not as bad as products with glycerin that I leave in my hair.

There are a couple issues that I have with the label. First, I really wish companies would get in the habit of listing exactly which essential oils, absolutes, oleoresins, or extracts they used. People have allergies or don't like certain scents. I know that scent is proprietary, however, they really need to think of people's needs. Second, they should use the common name for everything as well. Sometimes they have it in parenthesis and other times they don't.

Smell and Texture
It does smell amazing. I really can't describe the smell and the ingredient list isn't that helpful. Sadly, fragrance is listed pretty high up in the ingredient list. There are also two extracts that could add scent: clover and peppermint. Happily, the peppermint is very subtle because to me, peppermint reminds me of foot cream.

It is thick, however, it can be squeezed out of the tube easily enough. I love the packaging. I wish they would use more tubes than tubs.

Size, Price, and Packaging
Mine is 6 oz and was priced pretty fairly. I use it every once in a while. As much as I'd like to say I kick back and relax, it's more like I quickly deep condition for about five minutes in the shower. Hopefully the steam helps open up the cuticle and get the masque to work.

It's thick but can be squeezed out of a tube. My conditioner is only 6oz and comes in a squeeze bottle. Most deep conditioners, treatments, and masques come in a jar or tub. I hate these containers because they are open to light, air, and contamination. I think that more companies should think about different packaging for masques and deep conditioners.

Would I Get This Again?
Maybe. I don't like that there's not enough info about what exactly is in the essential oil blend. I'd also like to be able to find this packaging again, however, all I can find now is a tub. I'm on the fence about how Shea Moisture claims that no ingredients have changed. Perhaps the ingredients are the same but the sources are different. I'm not sure. If you're interested, you can buy it here or from Naturally Curly.
