Kinky-Curly Curling Custard Review

If you have read even a little bit about wavy, curly, or coily hair, you have probably heard of Kinky-Curly. A cult favorite, I had seen so many people rave about KCKT (Kinky-Curly Knot Today) and KCCC (Kinky-Curly Curling Custard). I really never even considered buying any of their products for myself and actually ended up buying one first for my daughter. I liked the KCKT so much, that I decide to buy the KCCC for me. My hair is about to the middle of my back. I have 2B, low-porosity, protein-sensitive hair. My hair is medium thickness and low density. I'm of European descent and I have dark virgin hair.

About Kinky-Curly: On my page about Kinky-Curly, you can read more about their company and read my product reviews. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

I bought both the KCKT and the KCCC. I bought the first one for my daughter since the top of her hair was like a rat's nest every morning. I bought the second for me because I was looking for a natural alternative to most gels that I found.
Ingredients
They have a very short ingredient list and honestly speaking, I love everything about it except the last ingredient: natural fragrance. KCCC is much better than KCKT since the latter seems to be missing ingredients, has phenoxyethanol and natural fragrance. KCCC only has the latter and you can read more about it in my review here.

Thankfully it is glycerin free since that can cause frizz during high and low dews. It has aloe, which is a film-forming humectant.

Natural fragrance isn't necessarily one ingredient, it could be a whole bunch of ingredients. Plus where is it coming from? Is it coming from a plant, or the earth, or what? They do say they are cruelty-free, so I would assume that none of their fragrances contain animal products, however, if they buy pre-made mixes, it's hard to know exactly what goes into them. What if the natural fragrance company they used decided to use the same dishonest business practices that Kinky-Curly uses and decides to omit some ingredients and they are animal-derived? Maybe they make their own natural fragrance, so they know exactly what's in it. I still believe they need to state it due to allergies or contraindications with medicine or a medical issue. It's a safety matter. I know that I can't control everything, however, I also feel that they should disclose this information.

Smell and Texture
It smells sweet and fruity. The texture leaves a lot to be desired. I've heard people describe it in different ways: snot and mucus are usually the most common descriptors. I think it looks gross.

Size, Price, and Packaging
This product is more expensive than what I'd usually spend, however, a little does goes a long way so the container lasts a while.

My problem lies within the packaging. I know there are some people that use spoons to scoop out products that are in open jars, tubs, or containers. I for one, simply dip my fingers in. Even if you wash your hands, I still don't think it's the cleanest manner to deal with a beauty product. Plus, let's be honest. I know I have dipped my fingers in, scrunched my hair, and then double dipped into the container again without washing my hands.

Another problem, besides contamination, is that an open container lets light and air in every time you take the top off. These two things that can further speed up a product's expiry date or make it not work as well as it should. Now, this product isn't cheap. This isn't super expensive, but you can easily get a huge bottle of gel for a couple bucks. I really think they need to invest some of that money into better packaging.

Would I Get This Again?
No, I really love this product but the lack of transparency in the ingredient list and the jar make it a no-go. It works great and it is pretty "natural". My two problems are that I have absolutely no idea what's in the natural fragrance and the packaging is just not up to my standards. I can deal with the fragrance issue. I would probably just buy it and stick it in another sterilized container, like a bottle with a flip top or a press top.

Even though I'm on the fence about getting this again, I know that for some people this is their HG (holy grail) product. You can buy it from Amazon or from Naturally Curly, and read other people's reviews of the product.
