My Thoughts on Kinky-Curly

If you have read even a little bit about wavy, curly, or coily hair, you have probably heard of Kinky-Curly. A cult favorite, I had seen so many people rave about KCKT (Kinky-Curly Knot Today) and KCCC (Kinky-Curly Curling Custard). I really never even considered buying any of their products for myself and actually ended up buying one first for my daughter. Even though she has thin, straight, European hair, every morning the top part of her hair was just a rat's nest. It would take lots of tears and frustration to get it combed every morning and I was constantly threatening to just cut it all off. So in desperation, I bought the KCKT for her because it was supposed to be amazing.

Their website leaves a bit to be desired. It says copyright 2003-2009, so they really need to update that. They talk about magazine articles from 2008 on their main page. They also don't have an About Me section. I love About Me sections. I'm curious to see how brands start and to learn their story. Luckily, I found this interview with the owner of Kinky-Curly.

They are also missing links to their social media. I know they have a Facebook page which they update pretty regularly. I haven't checked out any other social media. To be honest, I'm really only on Facebook and that takes up enough of my time as it is, I can't imagine trying to keep up with Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, and what have you. It's just too much for me.

Despite the name, they do say that their products are for all people with thick, dry, frizzy hair. Neither my daughter, nor I have thick or frizzy hair, but it is dry. Seeing as though I couldn't get a comb through my daughter's and I was looking for a "natural" option, I decided to give this brand a try since people said it had amazing slip.

Customer Service
I have not had any interactions with their customer service. They are pretty active on Facebook. They do state that they don't answer all their emails due to the massive amounts they get. Meh, I really don't think that's good business. They seem to be doing well and should hire someone to take care of that. But then again, since their website doesn't seem to be updated that often, they could have already hired someone.

Products and Prices
Their product line is limited, however, they have recently expanded it. On their website, they currently have 17 products for sale, 3 of which are combs or brushes. Seventeen might not seem like a lot, but I swear that when I first heard about them a few years ago, they probably had about half that.  They have products for adults as well as their Tiny Twirl line which is for kids.

As I mentioned before, their KCCC and KCKT are a cult favorite and they have an award up about it. The problem is, it's from 2008, 10 years ago. I know they've gotten more recent rewards and I feel like they should update this to reflect that.

They state that their products are all natural, which is great, but natural doesn't mean good or safe all the time. The issue that I have with their ingredients is that one of them is "natural fragrance". Now, I understand that fragrance is proprietary and they might now want to reveal that info, however, people have allergies or people avoid certain fragrances. Plus, what does natural mean? Is it coming from a plant, or the earth, or what? They do say they are cruelty-free, so I would assume that none of their fragrances contain animal products, however, if they buy pre-made mixes, it's hard to know exactly what goes into them.

Some of the products they have are KCKT, KCCC, Spiral Spritz, Tiny Twists Detangling Conditioner, Glass Pomade, Stellar Strands, and Come Clean. You can order directly from their website, but for me, seeing that it wasn't up-to-date put me off and I ended up ordering from Amazon. In addition, Amazon sells items that they don't have on their website. My guess is that they simply haven't updated their website, but I found Sea, Sand, and Sun Replenishing Masque and Pool Party Leave In Conditioner. You can also find their brand at Target and Whole Foods.

Let's talk about prices. This stuff is not exactly cheap. It's not super expensive, but it's more of a high-mid range for me. The good thing is that people said it lasts a long, long time. An 8oz container is said to last about 6 months. Obviously, this depends on how much hair you have and how often you use it. But they said that a little goes a long way and you usually just have to dip your fingers in and use it.

Check out the ingredients for the products you are interested in, I know that the KCCC has aloe, which produces a flash-drying affect on my hair. Having low porosity hair (and not much of it) means that my hair can often take all day to dry. This helps speed up drying for me.

Speaking of ingredients, at least one of their products has problems with their labeling. You can read more about KCKT bad labeling practices here.

Ethics
They are cruelty-free. They are a Signer of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. They also support Charity Water. They might have more ethical things, but with no About Page and limited info, this is all I could find.
