Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil for Hair Review

My hair is about to the middle of my back. I have 2B, low-porosity, protein-sensitive hair. My hair is medium thickness and low density. I'm of European descent and I have dark virgin hair.

Coconut oil is all the rage. It's supposed to be this magical cure-all for your body, skin, and hair. I'd heard wonderful things about Tropical Traditions' coconut oil. The fact that they also sold Florihana essential oils and raw Canadian honey, you could get free shipping once a month, (or use FS10 to get free shipping on your first order with a minimum of $20) made me place an order. This is 100% pure coconut oil. It's labeled as coconut oil for hair, but it appears to be the same as the regular 100% pure coconut oil.

Ingredients
This is 100% cold-pressed coconut oil. They have 100% pure (not certified organic and their most affordable), green (certified organic) and gold (wet-milled with heat), and expeller-pressed labeled coconut oil. They also have more choices under hair oils and you can find those under skin care. image source

Stats about Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has a comedogenic rating of 2-4 out of 5, meaning that some people will break out, but for some reason, many people are able to successfully use coconut oil on their face with no issues. Some people believe that comedogenic ratings don't mean much at all: Colin's Beauty Pages and Babe + Beauty.

The shelf life of coconut oil is 2 years. I keep my oils in the fridge so that the temperature is constant and to make the shelf life last as long as possible.

Smell and Texture
This oil doesn't have much of a scent to it. I really love the smell of coconuts so that was a little disappointing. It's steam-deodorized and that's why. It is basically the same as their regular coconut oil, made from coconuts grown in rural areas in the Philippines. It is not refined. In cold weather, it gets white and hard and in warm weather, it is a thin, clear liquid.

Size, Price, and Packaging
The 100% pure that I got was about half the price of the gold labeled coconut oil for hair. What can I say. I'm cheap. It's not organic, so maybe next time I should spring for the more expensive one. It comes in a 16 oz glass jar.

I found out that it's not expired but the BUB is the best if used by date (which is 18 months). You can use it after that, they just recommend that date for flavor and quality. With that being said, usually as long as it's not contaminated, coconut oil lasts for a couple years.

Would I Get This Again?
Maybe. I don't really like coconut oil that much. My hair and skin don't seem to like it. FCO or fractionated coconut oil is what I use in my roller balls, but regular coconut oil, seems to dry my hair and skin out. I don't really cook with it either. I might get it again and use it on my kids though. You can buy it here.

Random Thoughts
Patch test before using. Coconut oil turns into a liquid in warmer weather, so I keep mine in the fridge where it is usually hard as a rock.
