I have 2B, low-porosity,
protein-sensitive hair. My hair is medium thickness and low density. I'm
of European descent and I have dark virgin hair.

I used to love pampering myself and thought that deep conditioning would be an easy thing to do since I could literally put a plastic bag on my head, cover it with a winter hat and clean the house or do stuff. The problem is that, for me, I think that 20-30 minutes is the ideal time for a deep conditioning treatment and too often, I get sidetracked or the kids need me and I end up with the deep conditioner on my head for too long that my hair gets over-moisturized. Nowadays, I cheat and just slap some on my hair in the shower for five minutes or so. It's not ideal, but it'll have to do for now.
I had heard rave reviews about Shea Moisture's Raw Shea line, however, I should have compared my hair to the the people who were raving about it. I have low density and low porosity hair. My hair just can't handle heavier products; it gets weighed down. However, I ended up getting the detangler, conditioner, and masque.
This does have glycerin, which can cause frizz during high and low dews, however, since I rinse it out, it's not as bad as products with glycerin that I leave in my hair. It does not have aloe.
There are a couple issues that I have with the label. First, I really wish companies would get in the habit of listing exactly which essential oils, absolutes, oleoresins, or extracts they used. People have allergies or don't like certain scents. I know that scent is proprietary, however, they really need to think of people's needs. Second, they should use the common name for everything as well. Sometimes they have it in parenthesis and other times they don't.
It's not as thick as the JBCO treatment masque and you could definitely put it in a tube instead of the tub/jar it comes in. As I mentioned before, it hasn't worked too well as a deep conditioner for me. If I do use it, I mix it with the JBCO treatment masque to try to get the best of both worlds. Never wanting to throw away a decent product, I tried co-washing with it and that seems to work ok. It's still a bit heavy though, so I'd definitely limit using it to the dry, wintry months.
Mine is 12 oz and was priced pretty fairly. I don't use it that often.
It's not that thick so I wish they had stuck it in a different packaging and not the tub it comes in. I hate tubs and jars because they are open to light, air, and contamination. I think that more companies should think about different packaging for masques and deep conditioners.

Ingredients
This has shea butter as well as a few oils, such as argan oil, avocado oil, and soybean oil. It has sea kelp extract, which can act like a protein for some people. The ingredient list is short and I don't know exactly what's in it that my hair doesn't like, but it seems way too heavy for my hair. It might be a bit too moisturizing because even in the dead of winter my hair gets mushy. My hair loved the JBCO treatment masque, but this one just doesn't seem to work. This one has shea butter higher up in the ingredient list and that could be what isn't working for me. This does have glycerin, which can cause frizz during high and low dews, however, since I rinse it out, it's not as bad as products with glycerin that I leave in my hair. It does not have aloe.

Smell and Texture
This doesn't have a strong scent at all. It smells a bit earthy to me, but it's very subtle. It smells amazing. They have an essential oil blend listed in the
ingredients, so who knows exactly what's in it. There are some essential
oils and extracts listed: honeysuckle, Japanese honeysuckle, sage, horsetail (equisetum arvense), hyssop, and carrot seed. It's not as thick as the JBCO treatment masque and you could definitely put it in a tube instead of the tub/jar it comes in. Would I Get This Again?
No. It's just way too heavy for my hair. However, I know that lots of people love this. I'm on the fence about how Shea Moisture claims that no
ingredients have changed. Perhaps the ingredients are the same but the
sources are different. I'm not sure. If you think it's something that would work for your hair, you can buy it here or from Naturally Curly.
