Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Co-Wash Conditioning Cleanser Review

My hair is about to the middle of my back. I have 2B, low-porosity, protein-sensitive hair. My hair is medium thickness and low density. I'm of European descent and I have dark virgin hair. I have a handful of Shea Moisture hair products and they don't seem to work well on my hair. Some people have said that if you have wavy hair and/or low porosity hair, that you should try co-washing. Since my hair is both wavy and low porosity and I got this for free, I thought I'd give it a show.

About Shea Moisture: On my page about Shea Moisture, you can read more about their company and read my product reviews. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

I got this for free: One of my friends has a gluten allergy and didn't see that it had wheat when she bought it so she passed it on to me.

Ingredients
I'm honestly feeling a bit disillusioned about finding hair products that work for me. I'm wearing my hair up a lot lately. Shea Moisture products seem to have the same effect on me. The more product I add, the drier and stiffer my hair feels. The good thing is that they do use a few certified organic and fair trade ingredients.

Most of Shea Moisture's products have an ingredient called essential oil blend. I really wish companies would get in the habit of listing exactly which essential oils, absolutes, oleoresins, isolate, or extracts they used. People have allergies, essential oils can interact with certain medicines or medical conditioners, and some people just don't like certain scents. I know that scent is proprietary, however, they really need to re-think this issue.

Thankfully this product does not have a mystery essential oil blend, however, they have African Black Soap Extract and they don't state exactly what's in that. Also, for those of you who are strictly conditioner only, this is basically like a shampoo. Except, in my opinion, it's a bit worse than a shampoo since shampoo is formulated for your hair and soap is formulated for your body. This could be one reason why my hair felt so stiff and dry when using it. I think the other issue is that shea butter and coconut oil just don't work on my hair.

Smell and Texture
This smells coconuty. I can't smell the rosemary, which is good, since I don't like the smell of rosemary in personal care products. It's white and not that thick. However, like most of Shea Moisture's leave-in products, it seems to produce a flash-drying effect on my hair and I just don't like it. Although Shea Moisture has come out with new products that look good, I need to remember that this brand just doesn't work on my hair at this time.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I got the 8 oz container and have quickly used a good portion of it. Every time I use it, I keep adding more and more product in hopes that my hair will not dry out, but the opposite happens. It's in a bottle with a push top.

Would I Get This Again?
No. My hair really doesn't like this product. It just makes my hair stiff. I know that many people love this product from the rave reviews I've heard. I'm on the fence about how Shea Moisture claims that no ingredients have changed. Perhaps the ingredients are the same but the sources are different. I'm not sure. If you're interested, you can buy it here or from Naturally Curly.

Random Thoughts
Patch test before using. It has African Black Soap in it, so it's not conditioner-only friendly.
