NOW Foods Castor Oil Review

Years ago I used to have very long hair and I would oil the ends of my hair and give myself scalp massages with oil every day. About once a week I would do hot oil treatments. Since then, I've learned that oils don't work so well on my hair, however, I still use carrier oils in order to dilute essential oils and to make my own body butter. Make sure to follow proper dilution guidelines for essential oils. Click on the button that says "download dilution chart".

To be honest, I'm not that much of a fan of castor oil. It's thick and sticky. I know that some people actually take a spoonful in order to keep them regular, which kind of grosses me out. However, it has a lot of uses in holistic and alternative medicine, so I figure it should be a staple in my cabinet.

Ingredients
This is 100% castor oil. It's expeller-pressed. Now that I know more about the extraction method, I prefer cold-pressed if possible in order to keep the oil as close to its natural state as possible.  It does not say if it's refined or unrefined. Unrefined is usually the best if you want all the nutrition associated with the oil. Unrefined oils do have a scent though. It's hexane-free. It's not organic or USDA organic.

Uses
Castor oil has been said to help with hair growth. People use it on their scalp, eyebrows, and even eyelashes. It's got a purging effect, so if you use it for the OTM (oil cleansing method) be aware that your skin might get much worse before it gets better. It's anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and due to that, some people make castor oil packs that they apply to their abdomen. If you do this, keep in mind that they're very messy so use old towels and old sheets. It's also said to be a fantastic skin emollient. I personally have to mix it with other oils or butters since it's just way too thick and sticky for me, but everyone is different, so see what works best for you.

Stats about Castor Oil
Castor oil has a shelf life of about a year. It can last longer if kept cold and unopened. I keep my oils in the fridge so that the temperature is constant and to make the shelf life last as long as possible. If you leave it out, it will start to get bad and start to smell rancid rather quickly depending on how much light and heat it is exposed to. You can use this for hair, skin, or body care.

It has a comedogenic rating of 2 out of 5, meaning that some people are going to break out from it. Some people believe that comedogenic ratings don't mean much at all: Colin's Beauty Pages and Babe + Beauty. As far as the fatty acid composition, you can find the table below. It's got ricinoleic acid of 85-92% which is what makes castor oil amazing. It has linoleic acid of 2.5-7% and oleic acid of 2.5-6%.

Smell and Texture
This doesn't have a strong scent at all. It smells a bit earthy and nutty, but it's not overpowering.

It's a golden yellow color. As I mentioned before, I find it to be thick and sticky.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I got the 16oz container and it was priced pretty fairly.

It's in a clear plastic bottle. Make sure to put a tissue or cloth underneath the bottle or be sure to wipe the bottle after you use it so that it doesn't drip.

Would I Get This Again?
No. There are a few things that I don't like about this product. First off, it's not cold-pressed and there's no info about whether it's refined or unrefined. It's also not organic. I prefer oils in glass bottles, but I know that's not always possible. That's not much of a deal breaker as the first things I've mentioned. I know that many people have different opinions than me. NOW Foods is a very reputable brand and their castor oil gets great reviews. If you're interested, you can buy it here.
