Shea Moisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein-Free Leave-In Detangler Review

My hair is about to the middle of my back. I have 2B, low-porosity, protein-sensitive hair. My hair is medium thickness and low density. I'm of European descent and I have dark virgin hair. I have a handful of Shea Moisture hair products and they don't seem to work well on my hair. I finally figured out that my hair doesn't like coconut oil since it's drying for me, nor does it like shea butter. However, I am using up what I have before I get more products. After hearing so much about their low porosity line, I decided buy both the conditioner and the leave-in conditioner. I figured I could use it every now and then while I was using up the products that didn't work for me.

About Shea Moisture: On my page about Shea Moisture, you can read more about their company and read my product reviews. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

I bought this but didn't open it for a while. So many people had said it was their HG (holy grail) product that I was afraid I was going to like it so much that I wouldn't want to use the other products I had. Finally, I figured out there was no point saving it and decided to use it. Let me just say I was worried for nothing.

Ingredients
This has fewer ingredients than the conditioner, so I thought it might work better, but I still have the same issues. It has glycerin (a humectant), which can cause frizz during high and low dews. I'm still trying to figure out humectants, dew points, and how they work together with low porosity hair. While it does not have coconut, it does have shea butter and I'm pretty sure this just coats my hair and weighs it down. I have heard some people say that it depends on the formula. They say that they can use products from companies such as, Innersense, Boucleme, and Trepadora without any problems and those are all on my wishlist.

I'm honestly feeling a bit disillusioned about finding hair products that work for me. I'm wearing my hair up a lot lately.

There's another issue that I have with most of Shea Moisture's products. This issue I have with the label is the mystery behind the essential oil blend. I really wish companies would get in the habit of listing exactly which essential oils, absolutes, oleoresins, isolate, or extracts they used. People have allergies or don't like certain scents. I know that scent is proprietary, however, they really need to think of people's needs.

The good thing is that they do use a few certified organic and fair trade ingredients.

Smell and Texture
I find this product to be very strongly scented and I don't like the smell at all. It smells very medicinal to me. I can smell tea tree oil and clary sage. Unlike the conditioner, it does not have menthol listed, but it could very well be part of the essential oil blend. It reminds me of chest rub and being sick. I have a negative association with these scents. I absolutely hate it. I feel like the best time to use this is when I have a stuffed up nose, otherwise, it's just so strong.

It's not that thick. However, like most of Shea Moisture's leave-in products, it seems to produce a flash-drying effect on my hair and I just don't like it. Although Shea Moisture has come out with new products that look good, I need to remember that this brand just doesn't work on my hair at this time.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I got the 8 oz container and I've used about half of it. I might try it on my kids since their hair seems to get tangled more than mine. I keep adding more to my hair in hopes that somehow it will work. It was priced pretty fairly. It's in a bottle with a push top.

Would I Get This Again?
No. My hair really doesn't like this product. It just makes my hair stiff. I know that many people love this product from the rave reviews I've heard. I'm on the fence about how Shea Moisture claims that no ingredients have changed. Perhaps the ingredients are the same but the sources are different. I'm not sure. If you're interested, you can buy it here or from Naturally Curly.
