Appalachian Valley Natural Products Organic Helichrysum Essential Oil Review

I've heard of helichrysum, but it's quite expensive so I put off getting it until I knew a little bit more about essential oils. Although I knew I could diffuse this, due to the high price point I wanted to use it for topical treatments instead. One of the reasons that I love AVAT is that they offer sample sizes so you can try before you buy. This is important to John the owner and he actually goes below costs on this sample and limits it to one per customer.

Product Details
Also known as Immortelle (which means everlasting), Helichrysum Italicum is a rare oil only grown in a few places around the world. This certified organic, steam-distilled oil comes from Corsica, France, which is said to said to be the best place to get it from. However, some essential oils disagree. Floracopia, for example, says that Croatian helichrysum is the best.

Unlike Edens Garden and Plant Therapy (Get $10 off), AVAT does not have a line for kids. Helichrysum is safe for kids.

Smell, Use, and Viscosity
Helichrysum smells fresh, sweet, and herbal. It has a bit of a mossy-green smell to it as well like the woods. This is an anti-inflammatory oil that helps with damaged skin. It can also help with skin blemishes such as stretch marks. If you diffuse it, it can help with coughing and depression.

I do not like that they mention it can be used in the food flavor trade. I realise that there are professionally trained people who do take essential oils internally or tell people to do so, but they are highly trained and the products are regulated. I don't want people to get the idea that they can just use essential oils to flavor their food like they could with extracts like vanilla or almond. Extracts that are meant to be taken internally.

This is a thin, pale yellow, however, I often have to tap the bottom of the bottle in order to get drops out. I got the sample size. If you create an account, you will have access to more sizes. All their milliliter sizes have orifice reducers; their ounces sizes do not. If you're going to buy the ounce bottles, you'll probably want to either use a pipette or decant into smaller bottles. I forgot I had one bottle that was an ounce size and ended up dumping a lot of spearmint into my diffuser. My entire house smelled like toothpaste for a week.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I got a sample size of 0.3ml (3/10). I love that AVAT has samples so that you can try before you buy. There are so many essential oils out there that it's easy to spend a lot of money on things you might not like. Being able to buy samples may be more expensive ml for ml, but in the long run, you will save money. Since this is a precious oil, he charges $1.40 for the sample size and limits it to one per customer. He's actually going below costs on this oil but wants samples to be available at the lowest price points.

Usually AVAT has really affordable oils, but this one is more expensive than both Plant Therapy and Edens Garden. AVAT has 3ml for about $41 which means it is $13.67 per ml. Plant Therapy has 2.5ml for $30 which makes it slightly more affordable at $12.80 per ml. Edens Garden has 5ml for $40 and that's $8 per ml. Why the difference?
  • AVAT's: from France, uses the blossoms, and is certified organic.
  • Plant Therapy's: from France & Croatia, uses the flowering plant, isn't certified organic.
  • Edens Garden's: from Italy, uses the flowers and the leaves, isn't certified organic.
Using the leaves is probably one reason why Edens Garden can sell it so cheaply. Whether or not the location and being organic is important, is up to you. My advice would be to do your own research and see which one you think will be the best for your purposes.

AVAT comes highly recommended in the group, Real Aromatherapy Reviews and More 2.0. They do have GCMS reports, but they are done in house. They also don't offer dates on distillation or GCMS testing, however, John the owner has been in business for a while and developed a good reputation. With that being said, there are some people who don't buy AVAT oils because of it. Some well-respected companies such as Original Swiss Aromatics, Apothecary's Garden, and Snow Lotus Aromatics don't even offer GCMS reports.

Their samples come in bottles with a narrow mouth and screw off top. I like these sample bottles so much better than the wands that I always seem to knock over and spill. The oil is thin, but the orifice is small, so you might have to tap the bottle or shake it a bit to get drops out.

One complaint I have about their packaging in general, is that they don't have a label on the top of the oil. This means that you either have to buy bottle cap stickers or make your own. I know it's a wholesale company so that might be why.  I personally make my own stickers. They don't look pretty, but they do the job.

Would I Get This Again?
Maybe, I'll be honest, the one from Plant Therapy is a bit more affordable. I'm slightly wary of the one from Edens Garden since it's so much cheaper. I think when it came time to buying another bottle, I would have to see where they source their oil from and if there are any good sales and then compare them. The shelf life is about 4 years. I keep all my essential oils in the fridge to help extend their shelf life.
