Ylang Ylang is often known for its romantic, sensual properties. Common in perfume for date nights, not everyone loves this oil, with some proclaiming that it smells like cat pee. I was hestiant to get this oil due to that plus the fact that it is not safe for kids. However, I realised that most of the oils I had were safe for kids and that it was time to treat myself to some oils that were mine and mine alone. As long as I used them safely away from the kids, I shouldn't have any issues. One of the reasons that I love AVAT is
that they offer sample sizes.

Ylang Ylang is distilled in stages or fractions and results in five oils: extra, I, II, III, and complete.
- Ylang Ylang Extra is the oil that is collected during the first hour or two. This is considered the best and is often used in perfumery.
- Ylang Ylang I, Ylang Ylang II, and Ylang Ylang III are collected over the next few hours and can last up to a day. Each distiller decides where the dividing line should be.
- Ylang Ylang Complete is either all four of them mix together or the oil collected during the whole process. The latter is also known as VOP (Very Old Processing). Complete is a lighter fragrance and often used in aromatherapy.

Smell, Use, and Viscosity
Ylang Ylang is an oil that people either love or say smells like cat pee. Some days I love it and other days I can't stand it. But since there are days when I think it's wonderful, I continue to buy this oil. It's a potent floral oil that has a bit of similarities between jasmine, frankincense, myrrh, and rose. It's a very distinct, feminine frangrance.
Usually AVAT has very
limited information on its oils, but they have a surprising amount of
information about ylang ylang. It's a very potent oil, so a little goes a long way. Said to give people feelings of euphoria, it is also known as an
aphrodisiac.
I don't like the information they have about adding to a bath. You cannot simply add essential oils to a bath. Water and oil don't mix. The oil will simply sit on top of the water and come in contact with your skin, which means you are applying it neat instead of diluted. If you want to use them in the bath, Tisserand has general information about using essential oils in the bath as well as dispersing essential oils.
It can also help provide relief from insomnia and stress, as well as depression and anxiety, so makes for a great addition to a carrier oil for massage. You can also simply use it as a perfume. Patch test before using as this oil can cause skin irritation.
This is a light yellow, thin oil, however, I often have to tap the bottom of the bottle in order to get drops
out. I got the sample size. If you create an account, you will have
access to more sizes. All their milliliter sizes have orifice reducers;
their ounces sizes do not. If you're going to buy the ounce bottles,
you'll probably want to either use a pipette or decant into smaller
bottles. I forgot I had one bottle that was an ounce size and ended up
dumping a lot of spearmint into my diffuser. My entire house smelled
like toothpaste for a week.
Their samples come in bottles with a narrow mouth and screw off top. I like these sample bottles so much better than the wands that I always seem to knock over and spill. The oil is thin, but the orifice is small, so you might have to tap the bottle or shake it a bit to get drops out.
One complaint I have about their packaging in general, is that they don't have a label on the top of the oil. This means that you either have to buy bottle cap stickers or make your own. I know it's a wholesale company so that might be why. I personally make my own stickers. They don't look pretty, but they do the job.
Make sure to follow proper dilution guidelines. Click on the button that says "download dilution chart". Do not use undiluted. Patch test before using. Check the max dilution on the label. If pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor's care, please contact your caregiver first. Do not use internally unless directed by a licensed aromatherapist or physician. Follow safe essential oil usage; not all people or pets should be exposed to essential oils.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I
got a sample size. I love that AVAT has samples so that you can try
before you buy. There are so many essential oils out there that it's
easy to spend a lot of money on things you might not like. Being able to
buy samples may be more expensive ml for ml, but in the long run, you
will save money. Their prices are very, very affordable. So much so,
that had I not been recommended this company in Real Aromatherapy Reviews and More 2.0,
I would have thought it was fake. They do have GCMS reports, but they
are done in house. They also don't offer dates on distillation or GCMS
testing, however, John the owner has been in business for a while and
developed a good reputation. With that being said, there are some people
who don't buy AVAT oils because of it. Some well-respected companies
such as Original Swiss Aromatics, Apothecary's Garden, and Snow Lotus Aromatics don't even offer GCMS reports. Their samples come in bottles with a narrow mouth and screw off top. I like these sample bottles so much better than the wands that I always seem to knock over and spill. The oil is thin, but the orifice is small, so you might have to tap the bottle or shake it a bit to get drops out.

Would I Get This Again?
Yes, even though there are times when I don't like the smell, ylang ylang, has a very distinct, feminine fragrance and can be added to master blends. I also like the company very much as well. You can buy it here.
