Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Extra-Moisture Detangler Review

My hair is about to the middle of my back. I have 2B, low-porosity, protein-sensitive hair. My hair is medium thickness and low density. I'm of European descent and I have dark virgin hair.

I had heard rave reviews about Shea Moisture's Raw Shea line, however, I should have compared my hair to the the people who were raving about it. I have low density and low porosity hair. My hair just can't handle heavier products; it gets weighed down. However, I ended up getting the detangler, conditioner, and masque.

This line is meant to heal, grow, and strengthen, but they call this an extra-moisture detangler. My hair is not damaged; I have virgin hair that grows fine and I don't think I need to strengthen my hair. But, with all the hype about this magical line, I decided to give it a shot.

Ingredients
It has more shea butter than coconut oil. It also has apricot kernel oil and I'm assuming corn oil, even though it just says corn.

This does have glycerin (a humectant), which can cause frizz during high and low dews. I'm still trying to figure out humectants, dew points, and how they work together with low porosity hair.

There are a couple issues that I have with the label. First, I really wish companies would get in the habit of listing exactly which essential oils, absolutes, oleoresins, or extracts they used. People have allergies or don't like certain scents. I know that scent is proprietary, however, they really need to think of people's needs. Second, they should use the common name for everything as well. Sometimes they have it in parenthesis and other times they don't, for example, with argania spinosa kernel oil and hasminium officinale. And finally, sometimes the ingredient is missing info. Like it just says corn. I highly doubt they put corn into this and I'm guessing it should be corn oil.

Smell and Texture
This doesn't have a strong scent at all. It smells a bit earthy like shea butter.

For a detangler / leave-in, I feel like it's thick. It would be really good for hair that could handle thicker products.

I'm honestly not really sure what I will use this for. Maybe in the super dry winter, I could try using it as a leave-in and putting a film-forming humectant on top. I might also try using it as a co-wash or even a deep conditioner. I might try using it as a co-wash on my daughter's hair as well.

Size, Price, and Packaging
Mine is 8 oz and was priced pretty fairly.

It's in a bottle and not a tub, though most leave-ins come in some type of bottle.

Would I Get This Again?
No. I don't see how it can be moisturizing and strengthening. Those are often opposites. It did not really do well with my hair. It's so thick and my hair is low porosity, that it kind of just sat on top of it. It didn't moisturise it at all. I'm on the fence about how Shea Moisture claims that no ingredients have changed. Perhaps the ingredients are the same but the sources are different. I'm not sure. I know that many people love this product from the rave reviews I've heard. If you're interested, you can buy it here or from Naturally Curly.
