Shea Moisture Olive and Marula Baby Head-To-Toe Lotion Review

A few years ago when I started using Shea Moisture, I really loved the company. I liked their ingredients, their story, and how they gave back to the community. While their products didn't really work with my hair, I knew I wanted to use something healthy with the new baby.

About Shea Moisture: On my page about Shea Moisture, you can read more about their company and read my product reviews. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

I'm not really for putting tons of products on little babies, however, being born in the middle of winter meant that my daughter's skin kept drying out and czema runs in our family. Straight up coconut oil wasn't really working and shea butter was a bit too hard, so I turned to Shea Moisture.

Ingredients
This has some pretty good stuff like shea butter, olive oil, cocoa butter, mango butter, marula oil, avocado oil, borag oil, rosehip oil, essential oils, and extracts. I normally do not like coconut oil on my skin or hair. It seems to produce a drying affect for me, however, this did not seem to be true for the baby.

This does have essential oils in it (and some people say you should wait until 6 months to use essential oils). Make sure you follow safe essential oil usage; not all people or pets should be exposed to essential oils.

I have two issues with the label and the first is the mystery behind the essential oil blend. I really wish companies would get in the habit of listing exactly which essential oils, absolutes, oleoresins, or extracts they used. People have allergies or don't like certain scents. I know that scent is proprietary, however, they really need to think of people's needs.

The second is not telling you what everything is. For most of the ingredients, they've put their common name in parentheses. However, look at olus oil. I didn't know what that is and it seems to be a bit of a mystery. Naturally Thinking says it comes from vegetables.

Smell and Texture
The scent is not overpowering, but it's not mild either. You can definitely smell it. It smells fresh and a bit like flowers.

My issue is with the texture. This is supposed to be extra-moisturising, but it's anything but. I realise that it's a lotion and not a cream, but I don't feel like it really did anything for her when I used it in the winter. I think it would be great as a light summer lotion, but I wouldn't recommend it for winter.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I got the 13oz bottle. It was priced pretty fairly. It's in a bottle with a pump top.

Would I Get This Again?
No. I really didn't feel like it did its job as being extra-moisturising. I know that not everyone is looking for thick, heavy creams and that this would work great for the summer. I'm on the fence about how Shea Moisture claims that no ingredients have changed. Perhaps the ingredients are the same but the sources are different. I'm not sure. If you're interested, you can buy it here or from Naturally Curly.
