Appalachian Valley Natural Products Oregano Vulgare Essential Oil Review

Fall and winter are coming and that means colds and flu. I know that different remedies start popping up around now and one of them is oregano oil. Don't confuse this essential oil with oil of oregano, which is already diluted with a carrier oil. I know that some people take this internally. I would not recommend this unless recommended to do so by a certified clinical aromatherapist (MLM sellers usually aren't certified!).

I was told that oregano oil is the next best thing since sliced bread and can help kids get over sicknesses quickly. I hemmed and hawed for a while and finally got it. To be perfect honest, I *really* can't stand the scent and I'm glad I got the 10ml bottle instead of a bigger bottle.

This wild-crafted, steam-distilled oil comes from Turkey. Unlike Edens Garden and Plant Therapy (Use this link to get $10 off), AVAT does not have a line for kids. Oregano essential oil is safe for kids over 2.

Smell, Use, and Viscosity
In my opinion, this has a very strong, almost overpowering scent. I use it sparingly and can smell it throughout my entire house. When I think of oregano, I think of delicious Italian food and pizza, but this is just very much in-your-face that you can almost taste it. I'm definitely not a fan.

I do not like that they mention it can be used in the food flavor trade. I realise that there are professionally trained people who do take essential oils internally or tell people to do so, but they are highly trained and the products are regulated. I don't want people to get the idea that they can just use essential oils to flavor their food like they could with extracts like vanilla or almond. Extracts that are meant to be taken internally.

Oregano is a hot oil that stimulates the senses. As such, it can be used in a warming massage and with stiff muscles. It can be used to to help with breathing when you have a cold or the flu and is said to be a very powerful anti-microbial.

They also place a warning saying that it can burn your skin or mucus members and speaking from experience, it definitely can! I took off the top and lift the cap up to smell it and it touched my upper lip and while it didn't burn a hole it my skin or anything traumatic like that, it did produce an uncomfortable burning sensation that lasted for about 5 minutes or so. My recommendation would be to use a barrier such as gloves or a towel when dealing with this oil. As with all oils, keep it out of reach of children.

The million dollar question is, is it a miracle cure for colds and flu? In my experience, no. I didn't diffuse it at night and find my kids were back to their normal selves in the morning. I only diffused it though, I know some people dilute it and use it as a carrier oil. I also waited a few days after they had gotten sick to use it just because of the smell. I found that it *did* help them and while I wouldn't tout it as a miracle oil, I would definitely use it (sparingly) again when they are sick. I would use it right away as well instead of waiting a few days.

This is a thin oil, however, one thing I've found about AVAT's orifice reducers is that they are smaller compared to the one that Edens Garden and Plant Therapy use. All their milliliter sizes have orifice reducers; their ounces sizes do not. If you're going to buy the ounce bottles, you'll probably want to either use a pipette or decant into smaller bottles. I forgot I had one bottle that was an ounce size and ended up dumping a lot of spearmint into my diffuser. My entire house smelled like toothpaste for a week.

Size, Price, and Packaging
I got a 10ml bottle and it is very, very affordable. I wish they had a 5ml size because based on scent, I don't think I'm going to be using this oil that much. The prices are so cheap that had I not been recommended this company in Real Aromatherapy Reviews and More 2.0, I would have thought it was fake. They do have GCMS reports, but they are done in house. They also don't offer dates on distillation or GCMS testing, however, John the owner has been in business for a while and developed a good reputation. With that being said, there are some people who don't buy AVAT oils because of it. Some well-respected companies such as Original Swiss Aromatics, Apothecary's Garden, and Snow Lotus Aromatics don't even offer GCMS reports.

The packaging is standard. It comes with an orifice reducer or Euro dropper. The oil is thin, but the orifice is small, so you might have to tap the bottle or shake it a bit to get drops out.

One complaint I have about their packaging in general, is that they don't have a label on the top of the oil. This means that you either have to buy bottle cap stickers or make your own. I know it's a wholesale company so that might be why.  I personally make my own stickers. They don't look pretty, but they do the job.

Would I Get This Again?
Yes, I probably would. I absolutely despise the scent but I know that there is more to essential oils than scent. I need to learn that in some cases, usage triumphs scent. You can buy it here.
