My Thoughts on The Honest Company

The Honest Company was started by Jessica Alba. I like the idea behind their company: honest ingredients that are safe for kids. However, the reality is a bit further from the truth. Their laundry detergent had SLS in it, their problems in 2016, sunscreen that doesn't work, and moldy wipes, just to name a few issues that they've had.

Let's get one thing straight: natural doesn't always mean safe. While we're on the topic of "natural" stuff, just because something is natural, doesn't mean that it doesn't need preservatives. I used to think, oh, no I don't want my natural stuff to have preservatives. Preservatives are a good thing. They're there to inhibit bacteria and mold from growing.

Try an experiment. Cook something using natural ingredients. Now just leave it out on your counter for a week or so. Do you think that simply because you used natural ingredients that it wouldn't become contaminated? You can read more at Personal Care Truth. If a product has water, or a water-based ingredient such as aloe, the majority of the time, it will need a preservative. There are exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, a preservative is needed.

With more and more people creating their own little home businesses and not shipping their products off to get tested at a lab, you need to do your research and make sure the products you use are safe. Established companies should be getting lab reports done. But that friend of a friend who makes stuff on the side? It's probably not likely that she's had her products tested. I'm all for supporting small, local businesses; however, business owners need to do their research and take courses and study to make sure that their products are safe.

Customer Service
Their customer service is lacking to say the least. I wrote to them on Facebook on January 30th and still have not had a reply. Facebook makes it easy to set up auto replies. They haven't done that. To make it worse, my message hasn't even gone through. It's a white circle instead of a filled it blue circle. Maybe if you called or emailed you'd get an answer. I can't be bothered. Any company that doesn't handle social media well gets low marks in my book.

Prices are Affordable
Their prices are pretty average for their niche. Honestly speaking, their prices are a little expensive, however, that's due to the ingredients. They have a lot of products that I'd love to buy on an on-going basis, but for now, they're going to have to be for special occasions or desperate measures. The latter (my daughter's persistent dry skin) made me shell out the cash. They have sales and discount codes that you can find at the end of this post.

Products
They have a variety of products, such as bubble bath, shampoo and conditioner, diapers, chest congestion rub, belly balm, and more. Their quality is kinda meh. They've had recalls and products not work. I wanted to like them, but their reputation proceeded themselves and I've never bought anything from them; however, my husband has and I'll be reviewing what he bought from them shortly.

Ethics
Their products use organic ingredient, which I feel is ethical. That's about the only good thing I can say about them. They've been in the news many times and it's not usually good news.

My Reviews
Below are The Honest Company products that I have reviewed. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

Discount Codes and Sales
They occasionally offer sales and deals throughout the year. The best thing to do would be to sign up for their newsletter to find out about them. I write about all the sales and deals that I know of. Here is the label for all the past sales and deals. You can also find a list at the bottom of this post.
