Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Review

Clay has a variety of uses. I know with clay some people actually eat it and swear by the health benefits. If you want to do that, that's up to you and your medical practitioner, I'm going to stick with pasting it on my face and putting it in the bath. I tried a hair clay mask once and nearly cried. It sucked out all the moisture from my hair and matted it. I know some people swear by them though. My advice would be to patch test a small area before putting it all over your hair like I did.

About Aztec Secret: On my page about Aztec Secret, you can read more about their company and see my product review. I have reviewed other companies and their products as well and you can find those on my complete list.

I got this for free: I love free stuff! I used to volunteer at my local thrift store and per the store's policy, they were not able to sell any toiletries, whether they were opened or not. Any items that were donated were put in the break room and the volunteers were able to take them home. Someone had donated this clay (it was opened) and I was more than happy to take it home for free.

Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
When I picked this up for free at my local thrift store, I had never heard of it before. I just saw that it was clay and I figured I could make face masks with it. I went on Amazon to check it out and holy cow was I surprised! Over 13,000 people had reviewed this item and the vast majority were positive reviews. You can buy it here.

Basically speaking, clay sucks out the bad stuff. Stick it on your face and the gunk gets sucked out of your pores. Make sure you use it correctly: most people don't. What you need to do is add a bit of water and then put it on your face and wait for it to start drying. Don't wait until it's completely dry. Doing so can further dry out your skin. Once it starts to dry: take it off. Here's more info about that.

When I use clay masks, it makes my face feel cold and I dread using them in the winter. They can also take forever to dry. I've found that adding a bit of activated charcoal powder into the mix greatly decreases the drying time.

Some people also use clay, coconut oil, charcoal, and other things to make toothpaste. I will say this, any time you add water to something, you will need a preservative. If you're not adding water or a water-based ingredient (such as aloe), you're fine. So if you're going to mix all your ingredients together and use them then and there, that's fine. But if you're adding water and planning on sticking it in your medicine cabinet without a preservative; think again, it's a breeding ground for bacteria.

There is an expiration date on my clay and it has expired, but, hear me out. It's clay. It's literally as old as dirt. I'm not sure it expires and I think it might simply be a requirement to have an expiration date. Mine has expired and I still use it. But that's me. You need to do what you feel comfortable doing.

Ingredients
It's 100% natural calcium bentonite clay. That's pretty cool that a simple affordable product with only one ingredient and from what I can tell, not that much marketing, has helped so many people.

Smell and Texture
It smells a bit earthy, but the smell isn't strong at all. I do have problems mixing it with water. I can never seem to get the right consistency, but that's probably user-error. I usually take a bit of clay and charcoal and put that in the palm of my hand and slowly starting adding drops of water. I know that some people add apple cider vinegar or essential oils, but I just keep in simple. I mix it in my hands so that I don't waste any. When using clays, remember to avoid any metals. So no metal utensils or mixing bowls. Use plastic or glass.

Price and Packaging
If you look on Amazon, you can check out the price. It's super affordable, especially when you consider that it's a pound of clay. I suppose it depends what you use it for an how often you use it. But when I got this for free from my thrift store, it was about halfway full and I still have about a quarter of it left after using it for a year.

It's a plastic container with a screw-off lid. I added some plastic that I put over the opening before I put the top on. I found that this keeps the clay from spilling or coming out in a cloud of smoke when I open the top. Honestly, it's not a pretty package, but I don't care. It works fine.

Would I Get This Again?
Edit: I am staying away from clays for now due to expert opinion about lead in clay and food. Check them out: Dr Christianson, Tamara Rubin, USGS, and Science Direct. These articles say that there is a lot of misinformation out there especially when companies would have you believe that you eat a lot of lead in food.

Old info: Most definitely! It's a super affordable, healthy option for a face mask. A container would probably last me a couple years. On their website, they say that one pound makes 10-15 facial packs. I've definitely made more than that many. I've tried using as much clay as they recommend and it's just too much for me. You can buy it here.

Random Thoughts
Their name doesn't seem politically correct. As with any skincare item, you should do a patch test first.
